Pharmacy Residency
Program Overview
Monroe Clinic’s PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with an empasis in Ambulatory/Primary Care was established in 2007. The residency's primary goal is to prepare competent pharmacist clinicians, capable for any of the following: independently in a clinic setting in collaboration with physicians; adjunct faculty positions; PGY-2 training. Throughout the year, the resident will work alongside physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists, providing support to physician colleagues and assisting with pharmacist-run pharmacotherapy clinics. The program has a strong teaching emphasis, including a learning experience as a clinical instructor in Pharmacotherapy Lab at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy and completion of a Teaching Certificate Program. Required learning experiences include Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Medication Use, Pharmacotherapy Clinic, and Pharmacotherapy Lab Teaching. Elective learning experiences include Psychiatry, Pulmonology and allergy, Rheumatology, and Gastroenterology. Based on resident interest, there may be opportunity for rotations in Nephrology, Cariology Women's Health, Endocrinology, and Pediatrics. The program meets all goals and objectives of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists accreditation standards, with accreditation currently pending.

MEET THE PRECEPTOR

Julie Bartell, PharmD obtained a B.A. in biology and Spanish from Washington University in St. Louis, and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. She went on to complete a primary care residency at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Julie has been published in various medical journals, including the Clinical Journal of Pain, the Journal of American Pharmacists Association, Journal School of Health, Student Pharmacist, and the Journal of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin. She joined the Monroe Clinic as Pharmacotherapist in July 2007 where she implemented a Pharmacotherapy clinic for anticoagulation, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. She is also a Clinical Instructor and regular guest lecturer at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy.
- David Grinder, M.S., RPh graduated from the University of Montana School of Pharmacy and completed his general practice residency at James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Florida. He went on to obtain his MS in Business Administration at the University of South Florida and later began his pharmacy career as Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Florida. He moved on to become Director of Pharmacy at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida where he developed the first ASHP-accredited residency in pediatrics. He was Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacy Practice, and has written numerous papers, which have been published in a variety of pharmacy journals. He served as President of the Southwest Florida Society of Hospital Pharmacists, as well as on several other Boards and Advisory groups. Ultimately, he enjoys system analysis and applying such analysis to organizational change. He joined the Monroe Clinic as Director of Pharmacy in May of 2005.
- Chris Nemergut, PharmD earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from Midwestern University in Chicago and his B.A. in biology from Southern Connecticut State University. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where he later worked in the Center of Drug Policy for several years. Dr. Nemergut joined the Monroe Clinic in 2008, where he works as a staff pharmacist. He has been published in several journals, and is a Clinical Instructor for the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Applicants must be a graduate from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education accredited School of Pharmacy with a PharmD degree and eligible for licensure in the State of Wisconsin. Criteria for consideration include interest in ambulatory care, communication skills, pharmacotherapeutic knowledge, leadership ability, independence, confidence, and maturity. An onsite interview and participation in the ASHP Resident Matching Program, is required.
Candidates interested in the program should submit a cover letter stating career goals, reason for wanting to complete a residency and their interest in Monroe Clinic. Also required is a Monroe Clinic application form, curriculum vitae, offical college transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Application materials should be sent to:
