What are cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of a person’s natural lens inside the eye.  This change causes the patient to experience burry vision and/or glare with driving or bright lights. A person may have cataracts in just one eye, but they usually develop in both.

What causes cataracts?

Cataracts are usually caused by:

·       Age (most common)

·       Genetic predisposition

·       Diabetes

·       Previous injury or trauma to the eye

·       Long-term use of steroids

How are cataracts treated?

The only treatment for cataracts is surgery.  During cataract surgery the natural lens is removed and an intraocular lens implant is placed in the eye to give the patient their best possible vision.
