ACL injuries among female athletes are all too common. The reasons behind the difference in gender occurrence are not entirely clear, but experts theorize it could be due to differences in anatomy, such as knee alignment, muscle strength or ligament laxity. It also underlines the importance of conditioning for females.

No matter the age, gender or competitive level, an ACL knee injury is not something to be taken lightly, as it can be devastating to the knee's functional ability. Of special concern for young athletes is the fact that open growth plates pose a problem and limit options for ACL reconstruction. Recovery typically involves surgery and physical therapy for most patients. 

How to detect an ACL tear:

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is one of four ligaments that keep the knee stable during movement. A tear occurs when too much force is placed on the ligament; this includes sudden pivots, quick starts and stops, and landing with straight knees.  This causes the knee to “give out” and make a popping sound. The knee will rapidly swell, and pain will be felt when weight is applied to the leg.

After an ACL tear, ice, elevation and plenty of rest will help alleviate pain. Any recommendations given by a medical professional should be followed for the recovery process to begin. Whether or not surgery is needed for the ACL injury, rehabilitation is a must! Rehab will help regain the knee’s flexibility while also preventing future knee injuries.

Some symptoms can indicate a more serious issue requiring timely intervention and treatment. If you experience the following symptoms, seek immediate medical attention:

  • Severe pain in the knee or leg
  • Swelling of leg
  • Heat or tenderness in calf
  • Fever that last over 24 hours

How to prevent ACL injuries:

 “Unfortunately, these injuries occur in very uncontrollable circumstances,” says Eric Katzenberger, ATC/LAT, of Monroe Clinic. “However, athletes need to be proactive and practice proper exercises and conditioning techniques.”
