Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read is a program that supports literacy development at birth, with parents learning how important it is to talk and sing to their babies early. Doctors and other clinicians speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud to older infants and toddlers every day, and offer age-appropriate tips and encouragement. Children are given developmentally-appropriate books to take home at each well-child visit from 6 months through age 5. Displays, library information and books create a literacy-rich clinic environment.

Physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals at Monroe Clinic have incorporated the Reach Out and Read program into their regular pediatric checkups. They guide parents through the importance of reading aloud with their child and will be offer developmental books with a prescription to read.
